You can change your notification preferences by clicking the three-line menu in the upper left of your Canvas and going to settings. Now you can copy design elements from one Design Space Canvas and paste them to another. Just select and copy the desired object (or group of objects), then paste them into a new or existing Design Space canvas. You can use your favorite keyboard shortcuts or use the Edit dropdown menu to use the Copy and Paste commands. We’ve rewritten the code for Canvas to improve performance, including its ability to handle larger, more complicated files faster!

June 2022 Cricut Design Space Updates (v7.

This update changed My Projects in the top navigation bar to My Stuff. My Stuff has a lot more than My Projects did, including your uploaded and saved images. When you bookmark a project, you’ll get more options for organizing your files within My Stuff, including accessing all of your collections. On a text box, you’ll notice that there are also “handles” on the bounding box on the top, bottom, and right and left sides. This update includes a brand new tool called Cricut Editable Images.

You’ll notice links to helpful how-to and tutorial videos within Design Space. These short segments will help you learn new features, brush up on basics, or just level up your creative skillset. The 7.9 update also has updates and improvements to the Background Remover feature when you’re uploading outside files (SVG, DXF, JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP). If you remove a background and want to restore some of it, you can now see a vague shadow of what will be restored when you use the restore tool.

Also, soon we will be making changes that affect members who use the free Design Space app without a Cricut Access plan. Every calendar month, these members will be allowed to upload up to 20 personal images and/or patterns. Members with a paid Cricut Access plan will have unlimited uploads. All members, with or without a paid plan, will keep all of their existing uploads in Design Space. Enhanced user experience on Mat Preview allows you to remove grid lines on the mat preview to show greater contrast. Simply click away from the image layer to view it on the mat without grid lines.

September 2022 Cricut Design Space Updates (v7.

With this update, you have the ability to turn shapes, text, and images into guides to help you build your projects. There are also new bounding box handles allowing you to resize your textbox without changing the size of your font. Text will now wrap automatically when you resize the box, eliminating the need for hard returns! Within the desktop and iOS versions of Design Space, there is a new option within Canvas that provides easy access to our vast library of pre-designed Phrases. Similar to the image search option, it will allow you to find popular phrases for your projects.

This newest release had a great new feature for Cricut Access members—Cricut Monogram Maker! I’ve written about how to use this new tool in my post How to Use the Cricut Monogram Maker in Design Space. If you make the text box narrower than your text, Cricut Design Space will automatically wrap your text (force it to another line). These updates have to do with the way that items are handled on the Canvas within Cricut Design Space.

Your text will turn pink and this layer will automatically NOT cut. You’ll see the layer marked as Guide in the Layers Panel on the left. If you hover just outside of these corner bounding box, you’ll see a curved arrow. Now, if you hover over the corner of a bounding box, you’ll see a double-sided arrow. You can click the corner and drag your image smaller or larger. All you have to do is click the little green bookmark icon next to the font you want to bookmark.

April 2022 Cricut Design Space Updates (v7.

Depending on your design, you may want text closer or further apart — now you’ll have more control over the look you’re going for. We have already rolled out most of the new features listed below. Offset and Project Collections will roll out within the next few weeks. You can read our blog that details everything you need to know about the new Monogram Maker feature.

The developer, Najma Kousar, indicated that the app’s privacy practices may include handling of data as described below. Added additional information to the System info screen in the Design Space menu. If for some reason after calibration your cuts are still inaccurate, clear cache (the troubleshooting guide above this) and try calibration again. From the Canvas, you can now preview your design with thicker or thinner pen & marker tip sizes — so you can better imagine what your project will look like. Kerning is a technique used to improve the visual aesthetics of text by adjusting the spacing between two characters.

I recently found one update that I can’t seem to find in Cricut’s release notes. When you create text that’s overlapping (like a script or cursive font), Cricut Design Space no longer requires you to Weld your letters together. You can see here the un-welded word on the left becomes welded once you hit Make It in the upper right.

Hover over the Cricut Design Space icon in the system tray and you can see the current version of your software. Discover more personalized project inspiration with the new Inspire page! It can be found on the left side of the screen while on the Home page. If you notice a Design Space bug that needs to be reported to Cricut, you can send them feedback here. In the new version of Design Space, click on the Text button, and you’ll see a blue box with the word “Text” in it.

You’ll now get to preview a Cricut Design Space link in a browser vs. having to open the app on your computer or phone. Cricut often makes changes and upgrades to the Cricut Design Space software. Here is what has changed most recently in the desktop software, plus a history of Cricut Design Space updates so you can make the most out of the program.

There are also minor improvements to the Automatic Background Remover tool, which helps with removing backgrounds on more complex images. The biggest update for this round is the addition of keyboard shortcuts (sometimes called “hotkeys”) in Cricut Design Space. If you have used keyboard shortcuts in other programs, many of these function the same way. There are also some changes to the notifications in Cricut Design Space added in June.

Cricut rolls out their updates in “waves,” meaning that not every user gets the software update at the same time. There’s no way to force and update to get the newest version of Cricut Design Space. The best thing you can try is to exit and restart the Design Space program and see if it automatically updates to the current plugin. This update also adds more learning tools to Cricut Design Space, specifically for Cricut Maker 3 and Cricut Explore 3. If you have one of these machines selected, you’ll see a Learning Plan link in the dropdown in the upper left of Design Space.

More information about Phrases can be seen in these release notes. First, if you have a very small object on your Canvas, the bounding box handles will disappear making it easier to move around. You can zoom in to see the bounding box handles if you need to make any changes to size or rotation (or you can still use the Edit toolbar at the top). Also included in this update is another bounding box update! Now you can resize projects using the sides of the bounding box, not just the corners. This allows you to change the height or width independently, instead of adjusting them at the same time.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

fall of house of usher

We know from Poe’s experience in the magazine industry that he was obsessed with codes and word games, and this story amplifies his obsessive interest in naming. “Usher” refers not only to the mansion and the family, but also to the act of crossing a -threshold that brings the narrator into the perverse world of Roderick and Madeline. Roderick’s letter ushers the narrator into a world he does not know, and the presence of this outsider might be the factor that destroys the house. The narrator is the lone exception to the Ushers’ fear of outsiders, a fear that accentuates the claustrophobic nature of the tale. By undermining this fear of the outside, the narrator unwittingly brings down the whole structure. A similar, though strangely playful crossing of a boundary transpires both in “Mad Trist” and during the climactic burial escape, when Madeline breaks out from death to meet her mad brother in a “tryst,” or meeting, of death.

Roderick Usher

Many critics have interpreted the story as, in part, an autobiographical portrait of Poe himself, although we should be wary, perhaps, of speculating too much about any parallels. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault. In the days that follow, the narrator starts to feel more uneasy in the house, and attributes his nervousness to the gloomy furniture in the room where he sleeps.

Cast and characters

What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations. It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror. ” “No, not before,” he replies in one of the show’s many glimpses of Flanagan’s viciously dark sense of humor.

Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children. It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials.

As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house.

The narrator observes the house as having an almost human-like quality, describing its windows as “eye-like.” Just as Roderick appears to radiate his own melancholy, so too does the house have a depressing air. Furthermore, the house, despite holding together as a totality, shows signs of physical decay, like crumbling stones, dead trees, and mushrooms growing from the masonry. Madeline herself is dying of a wasting disease, showing physical deterioration.

We have a mysterious secret afflicting the house and eating away at its owner, the Gothic ‘castle’ (here, refigured as a mansion), premature burial (about which Poe wrote a whole other story), the mad owner of the house, and numerous other trappings of the Gothic novel. Poe condenses these into a short story and plays around with them, locating new psychological depths within these features. Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell).

Episodes8

On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims. Its windows are described as “eye-like,” and its interior is compared to a living body. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced.

“There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added. As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with. “You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places.

All of these nightmarish visions are attached to the family drama that Usher offers up for Dupin, giving the season a clever episodic structure in that each chapter intertwines a different Poe source into the overall saga of the Ushers. Inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe, House of Usher traces the downfall of the uber-wealthy Usher family and their corrupt drug company, Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. The story centers on Usher family patriarch and Fortunato CEO Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), who, as the show begins, calls up his longtime rival, assistant U.S. attorney C. From the start of the first episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, we know that all of Roderick Usher's children are dead. It's the how and the why of their deaths that plays out over the course of Mike Flanagan's new horror anthology series, now streaming on Netflix. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family.

Roderick tells the narrator that he suffers from nerves and fear and that his senses are heightened. Roderick’s sister, Madeline, has taken ill with a mysterious sickness—perhaps catalepsy, the loss of control of one’s limbs—that the doctors cannot reverse. He listens to Roderick play the guitar and make up words for his songs, and he reads him stories, but he cannot lift Roderick’s spirit.

A television adaptation was produced by ATV for the ITV network in 1966 for the horror anthology series Mystery and Imagination. A second silent film version, also released in 1928, was directed by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber. La Chute de la maison Usher is a 1928 silent French horror film directed by Jean Epstein starring Marguerite Gance, Jean Debucourt, and Charles Lamy. Hauser & Wirth opened its Los Angeles location in March 2016 in the heart of the burgeoning Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. Occupying a former flour mill, Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles is a vibrant communal space that links art and architecture with a dynamic events program. In addition to supporting and collaborating with many local and international cultural organizations, nonprofits, and universities, the Los Angeles gallery fosters public dialogue with the arts through a range of activities that engage the city’s diverse population.

Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. Siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built a pharmaceutical company into an empire of wealth, privilege and power; however, secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty sta... When Poe began writing short stories, the short story was not generally regarded as serious literature. Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories.

fall of house of usher

It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly. Some of the CGI, particularly one scene involving bodies falling from the sky, is unintentionally funny. Problematically, Flanagan tends to conflate queerness with depravity and sexual fluidity is punished here with an unnerving flourish. But the show remembers to be actually scary, with truly inspired uses of chimps, mirrors and sprinkler systems. There’s no question that The Fall of the House of Usher ranks among Flanagan’s finest works.

Poe's Stories

Both poems parallel and thus predict the plot line of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “Mad Trist,” which is about the forceful entrance of Ethelred into the dwelling of a hermit, mirrors the simultaneous escape of Madeline from her tomb. “Mad Trist” spookily crosses literary borders, as though Roderick’s obsession with these poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. Madeline soon dies, and Roderick decides to bury her temporarily in the tombs below the house. He wants to keep her in the house because he fears that the doctors might dig up her body for scientific examination, since her disease was so strange to them.

In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake.

Limited Series – The Fall of the House of Usher

Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance.

(Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family. Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility.

Film Credits

Perhaps the most obvious parallel lies in the initially shallow crack in the manor, representing the impending destruction of the house. Because the last of the Usher line are twins, that the crack divides the house in two signals their eternal separation in death. Roderick has come from a miserable childhood with a puritanical, sickly mother who believes that “pain and suffering are the kiss of Jesus”. The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror.

By creating an account, you agree to the Privacy Policy and the Terms and Policies, and to receive email from Rotten Tomatoes and to receive email from the Fandango Media Brands. As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution. As Roderick finishes his story, an eyeless and bloodied Madeline suddenly bursts out of the basement and attacks Roderick as the house begins to crumble around them. In a final burst of strength, Madeline strangles Roderick to death as Auggie flees collapsing home—a sequence that mirrors the ending of Poe's "House of Usher."

Soon, Roderick posits his theory that the house itself is unhealthy, just as the narrator supposes at the beginning of the story. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is probably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous story, and in many ways it is a quintessential Gothic horror story.

It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled.

He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality. Guilt permeates every frame of Flanagan’s Poe universe, and buys into not so much the horror as the terror. The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed.

Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels to the House of Usher, a desolate mansion surrounded by a murky swamp, to see his fiancée Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). Roderick foresees the family evils being propagated into future generations with a marriage to Madeline and vehemently discourages the union. Philip becomes increasingly desperate to take Madeline away; desperate to get away from her brother, she agrees to leave with him. Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife. These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way.

Described by Frederick as “Gucci Caligula,” Perry is the youngest of the Usher children. Having only recently been thrust into the life of the ultra-rich, Perry’s goal is to make life one big party, and he’s hoping to use his family’s money to achieve just that. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character.

What Size Generator Do I Need For My House

whole house generator

All of the generators reviewed on this list run on fuel, not solar energy. But a solar generator can be a good choice if you’re looking for a sustainable off-grid power source. This generator’s noise level is pretty standard for its power capacity, rated at 74 dBA.

Best Reviews: Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW Automatic Standby

A generator engine is similar to your car engine in that it requires upkeep such as oil changes, belt replacements and similar maintenance. Remote monitoring allows your generator manufacturer to keep an eye on its operating condition for you. Remote monitoring through the manufacturer or third party is available for a small monthly cost. The industry standard is a limited 5-year warranty, including parts and repair labor.

Best Overall, Portable

The seven whole home generators reviewed above aren’t your only options. While they didn’t meet all of our criteria for the best whole home generators of the year, one of these models might be right for your energy needs. All in all, the Pulsar G12KBN generator is a good choice if you want a generator with high power capacity on the road. It's reasonably priced at just under $1,000 but comes with only a one-year limited warranty. Most reviews report that the generator is easy to set up and runs like advertised, but some customers have complained about the noise level.

How to install a whole house generator transfer switch?

This Briggs & Stratton generator is a good option for someone who lives in an area with frequent power outages. When you lose power, a whole-house generator keeps your home’s systems up and running. Some are permanently installed to power your home in an emergency, while others are portable for off-grid camping and mobile job sites. Large whole-house generators have an output of 10,000 watts or more, which means enough power for all your appliances. On average, they run from 140 to 200 hours on a propane tank, a shorter duration than their smaller counterparts.

Installation

It features a G-Force engine that keeps things running reliably and requires less routine maintenance to boot. And when the power goes out, you’ll appreciate the 200-amp automatic transfer switch that lets you turn on your backup power with a flip of your finger. A whole-home generator costs $30 to $170 per day to run all day depending on the size and fuel source. Whole-house 15 to 20 kW standby generators consume 133 to 330 cubic feet of natural gas or 3.16 to 3.45 gallons of liquid propane per hour. The major con of portable power stations is the cost per watt, which can be significantly higher than traditional portable generators. Additionally, because these power stations must be charged via plug-in or solar, they may be difficult to use long-term during a power outage.

While whole-home generators conjure images of big machinery, Generac’s entry into the category is compact (in comparison) but still quite mighty, earning it the top spot on our list. National Fire Protection Association codes allow smaller generators to be a minimum of 18 inches from an exterior wall, but you should check local codes as they may have more specific requirements. Professional installers should know the local codes and help you plan the optimal placement for your generator as well as pull any necessary permits.

You can check the current operating status and maintenance schedule using the app. Enclosed in an all-weather anti-corrosive aluminum body, Generac 7043 has harmonic distortion of less than five per cent, which protects sophisticated electronics. And if you need more than 9,000 watts, you can boost its power by connecting to a second unit with a parallel kit (sold separately). With a nice combination of versatility and convenience, this generator offers ample backup power for the essentials during a power outage. Plus, it makes a great addition to weekend camping trips or outdoor projects. RV enthusiasts will also find that this generator provides enough power to start and run a 15,000 BTU RV air conditioner.

Reputable brands offer 5- to 10-year limited warranties on whole house generators. Protecting your home during a power outage is important, but cost is also a factor. Generators that fairly balance the value of protection with the cost of installation were proportionally rewarded in our review. Load management is also essential for protecting smaller generators over time if too many requests for power are made while the generator is operating. The device that controls the generator’s load is programable and allows you to determine which items are crucial and which are not.

A whole house generator, also known as a standby generator, is a device that provides backup electrical power to an entire house in the event of a power outage. It operates automatically and is designed to restore power quickly and seamlessly, allowing you to maintain essential functions and appliances in your home even when the grid power is down. Delivering enough power to run your home’s large appliances, this generator takes up less space while delivering more power than comparable units.

The community of standby power consumers is conscientious about the safety and security of their families and businesses. At the same time, they appreciate the investment a whole house generator system brings to their property. While small generators offering 5,000 to 7,000 watts may be suitable for a small home, larger houses will likely require 20,000+ watts to keep things up and running. So, not only does the size of the unit matter, but so does your outdoor space. Weighing 103 pounds, this generator is relatively lightweight compared to others on our list (and others in the category).

【Power Pretty Much Anything】 W output to power up to 15 devices at once. That means during a power outage or blackout, you can continue to power your fridge, microwave, dryer, and more. Energy storage allows for self-supply during outages for added resiliency. If your main electrical panel is configured to only have critical load (e.g., a few lights, refrigerator, A/C) on, your energy storage system will last longer. If you install energy storage, you can also take advantage of load-shifting to maximize your energy consumption during off-peak pricing and benefit from Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing control. Your energy storage system will charge either from the grid or solar while it is not in use.

For homeowners who live in an area that regularly loses power due to weather conditions, a whole-house generator can provide great peace of mind. Homeowners can invest in one of the best generator covers to protect the unit from the elements and extend its lifetime. Home backup generators may be standby, manual, or portable, and costs can vary greatly. A manual transfer switch allows you to connect and disconnect your generator yourself. Switching to generator power while your utility power is still on can overload your home’s circuits and damage sensitive devices. Some whole home generators are portable, so they can be taken on the road to power an off-grid cabin, RV or work site.

Whole House Generators Generators Sales, Install and Maintenance

This engine drives an alternator to produce electricity, which is then converted to the appropriate voltage and frequency for household use. Cummins standby generators cost $3,100 to $13,900 for models ranging from 13 to 40 kW. Cummins generators feature sound-insulated enclosures, remote diagnostics, and intelligent load management to balance power use across multiple appliances so a smaller generator can power an entire home. A standby generator produces electricity to power the systems and appliances in your home during a power outage. Generators are available in various sizes that can power just a few essential home devices or an entire home’s worth of devices and systems. A whole-house generator is simply a large version of a standby generator, capable of temporarily providing enough electricity to operate everything, or nearly everything, in your home.

Monitor fuel safety

The power bank can be fully charged with two Jackery SolarSaga 100W solar panels (sold separately) within 6 hours or in 5.5 hours via an AC wall outlet. While some generators are air-cooled, you should know that this one requires coolant, and we did find it to be pretty loud. If this generator makes your shortlist, keep in mind that installation by a certified and licensed electrician is a part of the deal. A whole house generator provides up to a 150% return on investment and can increase the overall value of your home by 5% according to Consumer Reports and Remodeling magazine. Other standby generator brands to compare are Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Honda, and Cummins. A home generator with an endless supply of fuel and no mechanical issues could theoretically run until it needs regular maintenance.

Output power, fuel consumption, and transfer switch

Make sure to overestimate your needs to be safe, as you don't want to run out of power in the middle of a storm. If you have a large home, you'll need a bigger generator to power all of your appliances and electronics. And with an electric start, you can easily get the 457cc 4-stroke OHV engine up and running with just the turn of a key.

Unexpected Benefits of a Standby Generator

Customers report helpful technical support, reliability and durability over several years of use. The Guardian 24kW is built to last for years with minimal maintenance. The warranty covers all costs (parts, labor and shipping) for the first two years, then major parts for the next three. Overall, this generator is ideal for short-term use in emergencies, off-grid camping or powering a mobile business. The Honeywell 10kW Home Generator had the quietest engine of the whole house generators we evaluated, with a relatively low 57 decibels of noise. They’re built with longevity in mind, but running any type of engine constantly will cause wear and tear on batteries, belts, hoses and fluids.

The best models take that in stride while lower-performing generators bog down or even stall. We also look at how efficiently a generator uses fuel and how long it runs on a tank of propane. Check out our generator buying guide for more details on our intensive testing program.

Electric Start

This totally automatic generator kicks in right away to provide seamless power to your home, and since it's the quietest in its class, you won't even know it's there. When there are potentially dangerous weather conditions in fire-prone areas, we may need to call a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event. During these events, we will proactively turn off power in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires. Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers, and our employees.

The Guardian 24kW Standby Generator is one of the most powerful air-cooled generators on the market. Air-cooled generators take in cold air from the atmosphere to prevent overheating, making them more durable than other models. Because of its large 24K-watt capacity, this generator is best for someone who can’t risk losing power to crucial devices in their home.

It’s professionally installed and certainly not sized for portability. After several years of use, we would have expected some issues based on the price, but there are zero to report. Those looking for a portable generator will find a solid option with Generac GP8000E. Ideal for recreational use and emergency power, this generator has a 7.9-gallon tank capacity, which means it has an 11-hour runtime at 50% load. It also features Quiet-Test Self-Test Mode, which runs at a lower RPM for five- or 12-minute tests. Loosely translated, that means less noise and less fuel consumption when you run a test.

At the cost of $80 to $300, annual maintenance will keep a generator in excellent condition. A standby generator will monitor and maintain itself by running several times a week and reporting back any potential problems. Whether homeowners are browsing Home Depot generators or shopping online, there is a wide variety of brands to choose from.

Before buying the generator, visit a local repair shop and ask them for the best brand that you should buy. You need 600W to light up a refrigerator, 60 to 600W for lights (depending on how many you have in the house), 1,000W for a window air conditioner, 60 to 300W for a computer or laptop. Unlike a portable or even a basic home standby generator, a whole-house generator can back up not only your essentials but even some nonessentials, making it feel like an outage never happened.

Standby generators are designed to be installed in your home and turn on automatically when the power goes out. These generators are best for people who don't want to lose power in their homes at all — they will kick on within a matter of seconds. Some can be monitored from your phone and even run self-tests to ensure emergency power is always available. This generator from Generac’s Protector line is designed to power large homes and commercial buildings. While it is powerful and built to withstand stormy or freezing conditions, it might be too big for an average-sized home.

This won’t affect the purchase price but will affect the cost of purchasing and storing the fuel and the total cost of running the generator. Generators can be powered by gasoline, liquid propane, diesel fuel, and natural gas. Some solar-powered generators have entered the market, but they’re less common. The whole house generator is connected to a power grid, which allows it to run automatically. The generator relies on a transfer switch to detect power interruptions. Once a power outage is identified, the generator’s engine is automatically activated and fueled by natural gas, propane or diesel stored on site.

If the power ever goes out, you'll be glad you have the Champion 8.5-kW Home Standby Generator with a 50-Amp Outdoor-Rated Automatic Transfer Switch. I used to live in L A. these are the 5 decor trends that Californians always get right

country interior design

I think this living room designed by Jessica Buckley makes for a very preppy look. Since it often rains heavily in the English countryside, you’ll need a proper mudroom for storing those muddy Hunter Wellington rain boots, won’t you? The walls and cabinets are painted in beautiful khaki green, while the tiled floor helps water evaporate quickly. A bench is placed to the side of this mudroom to easily put on and remove your shoes. Let these examples whet your appetite for creating a practical and beautiful rustic-inspired country kitchen.

Vintage Artwork

In a rustic dining room, ease the formality by mixing up your seating options – dining chairs, stools, bench seats and built-in banquettes can all be combined for an eclectic look. If you don't need a dedicated home office, but simply desk space for household admin, consider a console table or slim desk that feels a part of your home's overall decor scheme. Choose an earthy palette of teal, terracotta and leaf green, brightened with a white or cream background. As a general rule, offset bold designs on cushions with smaller-scale prints on quilts and throws.

Decorate with a blue and white color palette

To achieve this look, use neutral colors, such as beige or white, for the walls and add French Country-inspired furniture, such as a distressed wood dining table or a vintage chandelier. These easy – and beautiful – country decorating ideas will effortlessly introduce rural style to your home. Picking up on the key elements of the look, from natural materials to color and pattern, they'll bring a softness and warmth to your living spaces for an inviting interior with an elegantly rustic touch. Country interior design is a broad and wide-ranging design style that can vary depending on the region (for example, French country style is understood to be a subset of country design).

His firm, Jayne Design Studio, knows how to create personality-packed spaces for clients ranging from families to collectors. Danielle Colding, who came to prominence starring in Shop This Room on HGTV, refers to the homes she creates as artful and cozy. Never stuffy, she likes to build spaces around a client’s family heirlooms, art, and knickknacks so that the room is always a reflection of the individual. Keepsakes, vases, planters, coffee table books, and flowers are those essential items that are the icing on the cake.

Natural Materials

Here, a collection of flora prints and landscapes, some done in a homey, amateur style, are a cheery addition to the area around the television. There is a host of options for window treatments and curtains when it comes to country decorating ideas. For curtains that fit the bill all year round, consider lining a bold floral with a classic check, plaid or stripe. For a contemporary take on classic country living room ideas, make fresh and vibrant patterns the stars of the show. Combining a variety of prints, all in fresh greens and whites, ensures this room feels calm and not overwhelming. The hall sets the tone of the house, so be sure that your entryway styling creates the sense of warmth and welcome you expect from country decorating ideas.

When you're planning out country living room ideas, copy some of the tricks used by interior designers to bring a sense of light and airiness to a space. Think Perspex or glass 'invisible' tables; large furniture pieces, such as sofas, raised on elegant feet; and coffee tables made from elegant metal, rather than heavy wood. Country style interior design is simple at heart – more depth is added as you modernize it, but it still maintains that simplicity that is a hallmark of the design style. Neutral colors, such as whites, creams, browns, and beiges make perfect, simple base colors in modern country style interior design.

Go French Country

If you have wooden beams or exposed brickwork in your living room, highlight them to give the country living room look bags of authenticity. Country homes, with their beautiful oak beams and thick stone walls, are brimming with history and character. But the rustic architecture runs the risk of making rooms appear small and dark. ‘Whether you are looking for furniture for a side table, the frame of your sofa, bookcases or drawers, oak is the way to go when you are designing in a country style,’ says Ryan Jones from Land of Rugs. MYRTLES PLANTATION" LEGENDS, LORE AND LIES

myrtle plantation house

Regardless, someone repeated this story of the Williams' family ghost to Marjorie Munson and she soon penned a song about the ghost of the Myrtles, a woman in a green beret. The only verifiable murder to occur at the Myrtles was that of William Drew Winter and it differs wildly from the legends that have been told. As described previously, Winter was lured out of the house by a rider, who shot him to death on the porch. In the legend, Winter was shot and then, mortally wounded, staggered back into the house, passed through the gentlemen's parlor and the ladies’ parlor and onto the staircase that rises from the central hallway.

The Legend Of Chloe, Ghost Of The Myrtles

Shanna Riley/FlickrThe house at Myrtles Plantation, a popular site for ghost hunters to this day. It was during the time that the Woodruffs lived on the Myrtles Plantation that we get the first glimpse of alleged paranormal activity. A silent witness to over 200 years of history in the deepest part of the Deep South, the Myrtles Planation house is considered one of the most haunted places in America. Our unique property has various types of rooms we offer to our travelers, including, our twenty one room overnight accommodations.

CYPRESS RIVER

The war itself wreaked havoc on the Myrtles and on the Stirling family. Many of the family's personal belongings were looted and destroyed by Union soldiers and the wealth that they had accumulated was ultimately in worthless Confederate currency. To make matters worse, Mary Cobb had invested heavily in sugar plantations that had been ravaged by the war. She never let the tragedies of the war, and the others that followed, overcome her, however, and she held onto the Myrtles until her death in August 1880.

The Secret History of a Louisiana Plantation Home

Secretly called "the Colonel" behind her back, Katie was a true Southern character. Eccentric and kind, but with a gruff exterior, she kept life interesting at the house for years. According to the January 1871 issue of the Point Coupee Democrat newspaper, Winter was teaching a Sunday school lesson in the gentlemen's parlor of the house when he heard someone approach the house on horseback. After the stranger called out to him, saying that he had some business with him, Winter went out onto the side gallery of the house and was shot. Those inside of the house, stunned by the sound of gunfire and retreating hoofbeats, hurried outside to find the fallen man. Winter died on January 26, 1871 and was buried the following day in the cemetery at Grace Church.

Yet, if other sightings are to be believed, she’s not the only paranormal resident of the Myrtles. According to legend, Chloe’s spirit lived on, haunting the Myrtles Plantation. However, this story would not become widespread until many decades later. The other slaves, afraid that Woodruff would find out what Chloe had done when he returned, took the matter into their own hands. He lived there alone for several years until he was officially pardoned by U.S.

The plantation house is rumored to be on top of an ancient Tunica Indian burial ground. It is currently a bed and breakfast, and offers historical and mystery tours. According to legend, after being shot William Winter staggered inside the house and died on the 17th step of the stairs. Four years after the completion of the project, Stirling died on July 17, 1854 of consumption, as tuberculosis was called at the time. He left his vast holdings in the care of his wife, Mary Cobb, who most referred to as a remarkable woman. Long acclaimed as one of the most haunted houses in America, the Myrtles attracts an almost endless stream of visitors each year and many of them come in search of ghosts.

Fannie Williams Room

She was buried next to her husband in the family plot at Grace Church in St. Francisville. There were a number of deaths in the house from yellow fever alone, and it's certainly possible that any of the deceased might have stayed behind after death. If ghosts stay behind in this world because of unfinished business, there are a number of candidates to be the restless ghosts of the plantation's stories. The house may really be haunted by the ghost of a woman in a green turban or bonnet. The Williams family had an ongoing tale about her and while it may have been a story that was never meant to be told outside the family, the story spread nonetheless. They admit that while the ghost apparently did exist, no identity was ever given to her.

It's also very likely that something unusual was going on at the Myrtles when Marjorie Munson lived there, which led to her seeking answers and to her first introduction to the ghost in the green headdress. The Myrtles Plantation was constructed by David Bradford in 1794, and since that time, has allegedly been the scene of at least ten murders. In truth, though, only one person was ever murdered there but, as has been stated already, some of the people who have owned the house have never let the truth stand in the way of a good story. But as the reader will soon discover, the plantation has an unusual history that genuinely did occur, one that may, and likely has, left its own real ghosts behind. To prove herself worthy of remaining in the house, Chloe devised a plan.

She did not only not murder Woodruff’s family members; it is also doubtful that the family ever owned a slave by this name. Mary granted William permission to live in the Myrtles Plantation in exchange. He was wholly insolvent by December 1867, and on April 15, 1868, the U.S.

While his wife was pregnant with their third child, he started an intimate relationship with one of his slaves. Injured during the Civil War, in which he served as a fifteen-year-old Confederate cavalry courier, Williams planted cotton and gained a reputation as a hard-working and industrious man. He and his family, which grew to include seven children, kept the Myrtles going during the hard times of the post-war South.

The house appeared in a November 1980 issue of LIFE magazine but the first book that I have found that mentioned the house was by author Richard Winer. Both the magazine article and the Winer book mentioned the poison deaths of Sarah Mathilda and her daughters. The problem with this is that as far as we can tell, Chloe never existed at all. Not only did she not murder members of the Woodruff family, but it's unlikely that the family ever had a slave by this name. Countless hours have been spent looking through the property records of the Woodruff family, which are still available and on file as public record in St. Francisville, searching for any evidence that Chloe existed.

History And Hauntings at The Myrtles Louisiana Plantation

myrtle plantation house

When he came in 1810, the Feliciana parish residents revolted against the Spanish troops in Baton Rouge. After overthrowing the Spanish, they established a new nation with St. Francisville as its capital. The area stretched eastward from the Mississippi River to the Perdido River, close to Mobile. In August 1791, Clark Woodrooff was born in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Inside The Myrtles Plantation And The Story Of Its Haunting

The academy was apparently short-lived for in 1814, he joined Colonel Hide's cavalry regiment from the Feliciana Parish to fight alongside Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. When the War of 1812 had ended, Woodrooff returned to St. Francisville with the intention of studying law. And though Woodruff’s wife and children did die, they weren’t poisoned. According to this story, Winter’s ghost relives his last moments by loudly staggering through the house’s entrance and running up the stairs to the 17th step where he allegedly met his end. Many suggested that this might be the spirit of Chloe, which by this point had become a full-blown local legend.

Historic Preservation

It is reportedly a haunted place, and has been featured in television. The Myrtles Plantation has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. "They were part of a whole Creole community, free people of color, who were slaveowners and ran plantations," says Carolyn Brackett, a Project Manager for the National Historic Trust. "It's one of the fascinating things about that place, there are so many layers of history at Melrose. It takes a long time to sort them out."

A portion of the film was shot at the Myrtles and it was an experience that the cast and crew would not soon forget. One day, the crew moved the furniture in the game room and the dining room for filming and then left. When they returned, they reported that the furniture had all been moved back to its original position.

Several individuals have reported unusual things around the residence. Many property owners have recently capitalized on the Myrtles Plantation’s notorious reputation, and the location is now accessible to visitors for tours and as a haunted bed & breakfast. The ghost wearing a green turban allegedly appeared to Frances Myers in 1987. She was asleep in one of the downstairs bedrooms when a black woman in a long dress and a green turban abruptly roused her. The story expanded significantly and was substantially enhanced during this time to include the poison murders and the severed ear. But up until this moment, it mainly had remained a local legend that had garnered little attention from outside the region.

Possibly the most well known of the Myrtles' supposed ghosts, Chloe (or Cloe)[5] was reportedly a slave owned by Clark and Sara Woodruff. After being caught, either by Clark or Sara Woodruff, one of her ears was cut off, and she wore a green turban to hide it. In 1823, she, unfortunately, passed away from yellow fever, according to historical accounts.

The remaining four bedrooms, that are separated by a common sitting room, are accessed by a staircase that ascends from the rear loggia. The floor of these bedrooms were raised one foot when the house was renovated, as the addition had higher ceilings than the original house.

Shanna Riley/FlickrLegends say that Louisiana’s Myrtles Plantation has long been haunted, from its Indian burial ground to the 1871 murder of William Winter to the infamous ghost known as Chloe. Our journey from New Jersey to Myrtle Beach was well planned over a significant period of time. We are so glad to have worked with with Tom, Paula and their team.

Webber would be tried for killing Winter, but the case’s conclusion was never made public. Winter’s murderer is still unidentified and unpunished as of this writing. Moving the existing house’s walls made a formal dining room, a game room, and four spacious rooms that served as identical ladies’ and gentlemen’s parlors. Skilled craftsmen were also imported due to year-long visits to Europe to buy excellent furniture. Many forms featured elaborate plaster cornices that were fashioned from a combination of clay, Spanish moss, and cattle hair. The Stirling family required a home appropriate for their social level because they were respected well in the neighborhood.

This happened several times, to the crew’s dismay, although they did manage to get the shots they needed. They added that the cast was happy to move on to another set once the filming at the Myrtles was completed. I am sure that after reading this story, even the most non-discerning readers have discovered a number of errors and problems with the tale.

Marshal sold the Myrtles Plantation to the New York Warehouse & Security Corporation. Mary Cobb employed William Drew Winter, the husband of her daughter Sarah Mulford, on December 5, 1865, as her agent and attorney to assist her in overseeing the plantation properties. She agreed to provide Sarah and William with the Myrtles Plantation as payment as part of the arrangement. The Myrtles Plantation and the Stirling family suffered due to the war itself.

One such place is the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Each overnight stay with us includes a complimentary day time tour of our historical home on the property and a complimentary breakfast item from our coffee shop on the grounds, Elta. Yellow fever caused several deaths in the home; the dead may have been left behind after passing away.

He was given the pardon for his assistance in establishing a boundary line, known historically as “Ellicott’s Line,” between Spain and the United States. It was a simple check of historical records that revealed the real story. The true story of the Myrtles may not be as glamorous as the story presented by the staff at the plantation, but it is certainly strange. The history of the plantation is filled with death, tragedy and despair, leading us to wonder why a fanciful history was created in its place. Louis's own stint as a plantation owner started when he was granted 911 acres from his mother in 1795, land that was initially acquired as part of a grant from the Spanish crown. The Africa House, which was likely built by a slave he purchased in 1809, came next, made of bricks hand-pressed on site.

The cooperative, friendly and creative Suriano Team made our plan become a reality. We highly appreciate their craftsmanship, professionalism, and personal attention. We hired Suriano Homes after interviewing several other custom builders.

Up until this point, it was largely just a story that was passed on by word of mouth and it received little attention outside of the area. All of that changed when James and Frances Kermeen Myers passed through on a riverboat and decided to purchase the Myrtles. The house came furnished with period antiques and enough ghost stories to attract people from all over the country. Of nine children, only four of them lived to be old enough to marry. Daughter Sarah Mulford's husband was murdered on the front porch of the house after the Civil War.

The nightly dinner operates as rotational dining so that you can experience several restaurants with the same servers and tables each night. Each meal comes with an appetizer, main dish, and dessert. We really experimented with all the delicious appetizers each night as you can see below. The island is full of that classic Disney magic with character sightings and great customer service from the cast. If you don’t want to walk, a tram runs through the island. There’s a delicious meal of BBQ, sides, and dessert for all the enjoy and specialty cocktails to purchase.

Characters are not everywhere.

My 14 year old son was thrilled with the teen club which its wall to wall tv screens to play video games and private pool deck. On Disney’s larger ships, the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, there’s also a second adult-exclusive fine-dining option, Remy, a French-inspired restaurant named after the beloved Ratatouille character. If you've never cruised before at all -- or never cruised with Disney -- you might be worried you won't like it. And won't a Disney cruise be overrun with kids and characters? Short cruises offer less-expensive opportunities to "test out" the cruise experience. If you love it, you can always book a longer sailing next time; if you don't, you'll be back on dry land in just a few days.

Unparalleled Entertainment

Is a Disney Cruise worth it for your next family vacation? Today we are sharing the pros and cons of a Disney cruise. Three Michelin-starred Chef Arnaud Lallement is the genius behind Remy and Enchante, romantic French fine dining restaurants on Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish.

We stood in line for more than an hour both on the ship and onshore as we waited for the immigration clerks to process the many thousands of passengers. After breakfast on our last morning, it was time to disembark. We chose to hold our luggage with us, though it was possible to have it delivered down to the terminal.

The physical concierge lounge is a tangible hallmark of Disney Cruise Line's concierge-level service. Booking a concierge-level room on a Disney cruise brings many perks beyond access to the physical concierge lounge. Here's a quick summary of some of the Disney Cruise Line concierge benefits.

And, it differs from other mainstream cruise lines in that it is all Disney-themed, in every nook and cranny. Disney Cruise lines offer a variety a range of lengths for you to choose for your next cruise vacation. There are options for short Disney cruises of a minimum three-night cruise or four-night cruise (often on the Disney Wonder) to longer cruises as many as 14 nights or more. Each ship comes with the latest in comfort and technology. Disney Cruise Line excels at providing plenty to do for all ages. There are youth clubs for all ages, including a nursery for infants and a club for teens.

She loves to plan trips for her family to exciting places in the US, Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. In addition, she loves to help family and friends plan their next great adventure. Most hate the planning and research process, and that is her passion. When she isn't traveling, she's a high school US History teacher in an Atlanta suburb. One night, the show branched out from traditional Disney classics with a comedian.

Don’t Overpack

One evening you’re dining under an enchanted sky inspired by “Beauty and the Beast,” and the next you’re at a lively Polynesian luau. This rotational dining system is something you won’t find on most other cruise lines. Disney movies come to life in a dedicated onboard theater, where families can come together to watch both classic and new releases. When it comes to cruising, Disney Cruise Line stands in a league of its own, providing more than just a vacation—it delivers an immersive experience adorned with unique features. One of the most enchanting offerings is Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas. Here, guests can escape into their own slice of paradise, enjoying snorkeling, bike rentals, or simply basking on adult-only beaches.

The It’s a Small World Nursery caters to your littlest ones ages 6 months to 3 in a sweet space filled with safe, age-appropriate toys. Loving caregivers will quickly whisk away, soothe, and distract littles (these people are serious pros at this!) while parents slip off for some grown-up time ($9/hour, reservation required). There’s even a sleeping area with full-size cribs where the crew members can put your babe down for a nap. For older kids, tweens can watch movies, play video games, or hit the dance floor at Edge, while teens can hang in Vibe, a teen-exclusive space reminiscent of your coolest friend’s basement hangout.

There are three main dining rooms, so you’ll repeat locations on cruises longer than three nights. My daughter has food allergies so it’s always nice for her to have the same servers who get to know us. While a cruise isn’t exactly an all-inclusive vacation, you will find that much of your family vacation is covered at one rate.

Or perhaps you are worried a cruise isn’t the right type of vacation for your family, and you don’t want to commit to a long itinerary. On the pool deck, chairs are abundant for the adults, and access to the quick service food, ice cream counter, and soft drink machines. All day, they play movies, so you can relax at the pool deck and watch a classic Disney movie. Our kids had so much fun on the pool deck, which made the Disney cruise worth it for our family.

You’ve heard the famous saying, “When in Rome….,” Well, when on a Disney Cruise do as the biggest fans do. Many guests bring signs, magnets, and other Disney items to decorate their stateroom door. It pays to be a planner on Disney vacations because, like all things Disney, shows can get crowded.

Although Disney cruises are definitely oriented toward children, they also maintain separate adult-only areas. As a family of four adults, we certainly enjoyed the quiet that came with our own private pool. While you might find a cruise for a couple of hundred dollars on a different line, expect to pay more for Disney. Room rates start at $1,400 for two guests on the four-night cruise from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, that my family and I booked. If you aren’t sure or don’t want to commit to a long cruise, there are some wonderful three-night cruise options on the Disney Wish. These short cruises go to Castaway Cay and Nassau, Bahamas, and can be a great way for families to test out the cruise line as a first cruise.

If you absolutely must have a Disney cruise experience, it's a given that a short Disney cruise is less expensive than a weeklong sailing with The Mouse. Sometimes flight times and prices don’t work out to fly home immediately after you leave the ship. Instead, you may consider booking a hotel room for the day you disembark the cruise ship. This way you have more flexibility with flight times on the following day.
